Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin / One library on two sites
The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin was founded in 1661 and is the biggest universal research library in Germany with eleven million books and periodicals. It collects texts, media and cultural works from all fields in all languages, from all periods and all countries of the world, which are of interest for academic and research purposes. Among the more famous items in its collection are the oldest biblical illustrations, the 5th century so called Quedlinburg Itala fragment, a Gutenberg Bible, the main autograph collection of Goethe, the world's largest collection of Johann Sebastian Bach's and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's manuscripts, and the original score of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. It is an institution of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation), founded in the Federal Republic of German in 1957.
The Staatsbibliothek offers its services at two major public sites Haus Unter den Linden and Haus Potsdamer Straße. Haus Potsdamer Straße (near Potsdamer Platz / Kulturforum) is the conference venue. It opened in 1978, built after the plans of the famous architect Hans Scharoun. Haus Unter den Linden is the historic library building and was built between 1908 and 1914 by the court architect Ernst Eberhard von Ihne.
Apart from the opening session, all conference lectures, vendor exhibits, and the IALL Annual General Meeting will take place in or in front of the Otto-Braun-Saal at the Staatsbibliothek’s modern building Haus Potsdamer Straße (Potsdamer Straße 33 / Kulturforum / near Potsdamer Platz).
