Reading Room

Our first Newsletter of the Summer is out! It is hard to believe we have already entered the second half of 2020. Over the last four months, the Library, the Carnegie Foundation and the world at large have been going through many changes all due to the global pandemic that is currently still raging on in many parts of the world.

After closing the Library on March 16 the staff members worked from home until June 22 when we were finally allowed to open up our doors again to the public. Due to the circumstances regarding Covid-19, we can now welcome a maximum of 30 people per day to maintain the 1.5 meter distance rule. With the cancellation of the Summer Courses of The Hague Academy, we are experiencing a very quiet time in the Library Reading Room at the moment.

Since many legal professionals in The Hague are still working from home, we would like you to know that you are most welcome to visit us and spend your working days in the Reading Room, which has now become the best place to get lots of work or studying done this Summer! Don’t forget to schedule your visit by using the link below and agreeing to the Peace Palace Protocol! If you are unable to travel to The Hague, please send us your questions to library@peacepalace.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We publish this newsletter today because July 17th marks International Criminal Justice Day, a day that commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Since 2014, the Peace Palace Library and The Hague Academy have organized small events to mark this day and to bring attention to the subject of International Criminal Law among the Academy Students. As this is no longer possible for the foreseeable future, we chose to make the subject of international criminal justice the theme of this newsletter.

We hope you enjoy reading it!

We are grateful for your continued readership and support throughout these complicated times and we hope to meet you again soon in the Reading Room!

Stay safe and strong!

Best wishes,

Candice and Rens.

The editors.
