    Every year, on the third Tuesday in September, The Netherlands celebrates Prince’s Day (Prinsjesdag). This day signals the start of the Dutch parliamentary year. Queen Beatrix, Head of State, delivers the “Speech from the Throne” ( De Troonrede) before a joint meeting of both chambers of parliament, members of the cabinet, the Council of State and other invited guests. The Speech sets out the main features of government policy for the coming parliamentary session

    Commemoration of Hugo Grotius: A pilgrimage to Delft

    On the sunlit summer morning of Tuesday August 28th, a small group of people gathered in the New Church in Delft, which dominates the north-eastern side of the medieval marketplace, to visit the tomb of Hugo Grotius, known as the ‘Father of International Law’. On this day he died 367 years ago and to honor his legacy the Peace Palace Library organized a commemoration to celebrate his life and achievements.

    Summer has come to an end and so have the activities of The Hague Academy. Last Friday, the participants of the Centre for Studies and Research finished the first stage of their research for this year’s program on Criminal Acts at Sea.   • New target page recent acquisitions.

    Since last week we changed the landing page of our recent acquisitions. You will still receive an alert, an email message, referring to one or more webpages, according to the amount of subscriptions you have, but this webpage is completely restyled. In stead of just a short title, we now provide a more or less full bibliographic description, indicating if you are dealing with a book chapter or a journal article, if the item is an e-resource or just a book.

    Professor Yanagihara is president of the Japanese Society of International Law and Professor of International Law at Kyushu University. He is currently lecturing at The Hague Academy of International Law on “The Significance of the History of the Law of Nations in Europe and Asia”. The auditorium is fully packed as students listen to his course on the history of reception of international law, with an emphasis on China, Korea and Japan.
