  • Academy Students in the Spotlight: Public and Private Law Session

    This Summer, almost 700 students from all over the world visited the Peace Palace Library during the Summer Courses of The Hague Academy. They particpated in either the Public International Law or the Private International Law and some particpated in both. We asked four students from Paraguay, Iran, Brazil and India to reflect and share with us their inspiring experiences and here is what they had to say.

  • The Embassy of Mexico and the Peace Palace Library host exhibition on Hugo Grotius

    On September 5th, 2018, in the presence of His Excellency, Mr Edgar Elias Azar, the Ambassador of Mexico, who opened the forum introducing the exhibition by referring to the intellectual history of The Netherlands, an exhibition on Hugo Grotius was opened; the expo, presented in collaboration with the Peace Palace Library, was mounted till October 10th, 2018. The key note speaker at the occasion was Professor Henk Nellen, the most well-known scholar and biographer of Hugo Grotius.

  • Great Grandson of Peace Palace Architect Louis Cordonnier Visits his The Hague Legacy on the day of the ‘Hagologie’ course

    On Saturday October 13th, 2018, the second “Hagologie” course took place in the Peace Palace Library. This is part of a series of lectures concerning the history of the city of The Hague, also addressing i.a. the Binnenhof or the Schilderswijk. Mr. Jeroen Vervliet, Peace Palace Library Director, highlighted again the development of The Hague as City of Peace and Justice since Hugo Grotius, Tobias Asser, Bertha von Suttner and the construction of Andrew Carnegie’s Temple of Peace, eventually the Peace Palace, where arbitration as conducted by the Permanent Court of Arbitration and adjudication as administered by the International Court of Justice contributed over the 20th century till the day of today to the role of The Hague as legal capital of the world.

  • The Organization of American States and the Peace Palace: Visit by Secretary-General Luis Almagro

    International Law is the most important tool we have to preserve peace’. These profounds words were recently spoken by H.E. Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, on the occasion of the first edition of the Carnegie Peacebuilding Conversations. Mr. Almagro, who was the highest dignitary to attend this event, addressed an attentive audience and spoke about the shared history between the Peace Palace and the OAS. However, it did not take long before he addressed the elephant in the room: the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

As more international treaties come into force, media coverage has increased and many universities are now starting to conduct courses specifically on climate change laws and policies. This textbook provides a survey of the international law on climate change, explaining how significant international agreements have sought to promote compliance with general norms of international law. Benoit Mayer provides an account of the rules agreed upon through lengthy negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and multiple other forums on mitigation, geoengineering, adaptation, loss and damage and international support.     The Springer e-books database has been updated. Six new e-book titles have recently been added. SpringerLink is the starting point of access for Springer online journals and Springer online books. The Peace Palace Library has acquired Springer e-books in Humanities, Environmental Science and Law.
