Cover of an annex of De Nieuwe Amsterdammer, an independent Dutch periodical published 14 October 1916, showing a satirical cartoon by Jan Sluijters about the Battle of Verdun with the caption: Peace palm of the German Crown Prince. With peace dove: "We are all tired of the bloodshed." In addition to his paintings Sluijters produced several satirical cartoons for periodicals.
Image: A German eagle is stuck with one leg in a trap (Entente), with Verdun as bait. On the ground before the eagle lie bones and a skull, the remains of prey (Belgium and Serbia). The eagle holds a peace palm in his bloodied mouth.
