Book Donation ‘Negotiating Peace. A Guide to the Practice, Politics, and Law of International Mediation’
May 7, 2019Sven M.G. Koopmans donates his recently published “Negotiating Peace. A Guide to the Practice, Politics, and Law of International Mediation, Oxford University Press, 2018. Sven Koopmans, currently a Member of Parliament in the Netherlands, obtained his doctorate in international law at Oxford University (resulting in the book “Diplomatic Dispute Settlement. The Use of Inter-State Conciliation [T.M.C. Asser Press, 2008])” He is a former Senior Mediation Expert at the United Nations, political advisor at the European Union and consultant to the African Union, and in these capacities he worked e.g. on peace Cyprus, Kosovo, Darfur, Syria and Sudan/South Sudan; he has been involved in numerous peace processes around the world.

May 3, 2019The Peace Palace Library is grateful to have received out of the hands of His Excellency Minister Julio Duarte van Humbeck, Legal Counsel on Public International Law of the Republic of Paraguay, issues of the diplomatic journal ‘Revista Diplomatica’ of the Academia Diplomatica y Consular of the Republic of Paraguay. A welcome contribution to the Library. His Excellency Minister Julio Duarte van Humbeck donated the journal issues (and access to the electronic versions) on the occasion of his attendance of the meeting of the Council of General Affairs and Policy of the Hague Conference on Private International Law in March ’19, in the presence of Monique Legerman (Hague Academy of International Law).

December 20, 2018This month we would like to mention another Book Donation from Brazil, this time by Mr. Wiliander França Salomão who donated four books to the Peace Palace Library. Mr. Salomão is a professor and lawyer with expertise about the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and the United Arab Emirates. Mr. Salomão has written eight books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both in Portuguese as well as in English. At the moment, Mr. Salomão is preparing his upcoming book about the United Arab Emirates for next year. Mr. Salomão obtained his PhD and Master in International Law at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-MG) in Brazil. He is a professor of Public International Law and Human Rights at the University of Itauna, in Brazil. Mr. Salomão also attended the Summer Course of the Hague Academy of International Law in July 2016 (Public Law) where he also particpated in the Academy’s Model United Nations regarding the topic ‘Keep space for peace’. In addition, Mr. Salomão was a participant in the United Nations Module for Africa and the Middle East in Tunisia in July 2017 and attended the International Security Course at Clingendael Institute in The Hague in November 2017. January 30, 2015One month ago, the Republic of Korea presented a national gift to the Peace Palace. Congressman Lee Byung Suk, who initiated the donation project, presented the gift, a smiling ‘Haechi’, to the Carnegie Foundation. This granite sculpture has been especially created for the Peace Palace. The ‘Haechi’, a mythical animal with a righteous temperament, is a Korean symbol of justice and fairness. The Peace Palace and The Republic of Korea share a sad chapter in our modern history. Mr Cho Tae-Yul, Vice Foreign Minister of Korea and speaker at the unveiling ceremony, explained our historical bond and spoke about our common interest to further international peace and justice in the world.
