  • Library takes over Part of Collection Royal Tropical Institute

    December 12, 2013

    The Peace Palace Library takes over about 4000 books and 100 periodicals from the library of the Royal Tropical Institute (Amsterdam). Because of government funding cuts and the subsequent major reorganization, the Institute was forced to close its library as of August 1, 2013. A new home had to be found elsewhere for the library collection. The Institute has made every effort to keep its unique library collection publicly accessible, albeit in a different location. Consequently, the Peace Palace Library has received publications on peace, security, refugees and international law. These publications will be available in the course of 2014.

    This past month our Embassy Book Donation Project received a major boost as one Embassy after the other generously donated numerous publications to our National Law Collection. The first Embassy to enrich our collection in early July was Serbia. They were quickly followed by the Embassy of Belarus, the Embassy of Estonia, The Russian Embassy, the British Embassy, the Embassy of Ireland and at the end of August, we received many donations from the Embassy of the Czech Republic.     This month, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in The Netherlands has participated in the Embassy Book Donation Project as part of our upcoming Centenary. The Slovenian Embassy, through H.E. Ambassador Leon Marc enriched our Library with publications from Slovenia’s foremost international lawyer at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, Professor Leonid Pitamic.

    To expand the Peace Palace Library’s National Law Collection, the Carnegie Foundation for the Centenary of the Peace Palace started the Embassy Book Donation Project in which Embassies in The Hague are requested to donate law books regarding their national laws & legislation. The Embassies of Ecuador and Malta were the first ones willing to participate. Find out more what publications on Ecuadorian and Maltese law are now part of our collection.
