  • The Hague Academy Event ‘Hours in Crisis’

    During the first week of the Winter Course, 40 Academy students took part in the first ever ‘Hours in Crisis’ simulation exercise where they acted as legal counselors in a fictitious case dealing with an international crisis. The ‘Hours of Crisis’ simulation exercise, created entirely by the Academy’s Secretary-General Professor Thouvenin, lasted almost 10 hours and gave students an exciting chance to put their international law knowledge and skills to the test.

  • Concert To End All Wars, Vredespaleis en Doorn, 10 en 11 november 2018

    In een uniek concert bundelen het Montiverdi Kamerkoor Utrecht en de Konrad Koselleck Big Band hun krachten om het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog te herdenken. Indringende koormuziek uit die tijd van componisten als Elgar en Ravel ontmoet de vroegere Jazzbandmuziek, nieuwe composities wisselen af met oorlogsklassiekers.

  • The Organization of American States and the Peace Palace: Visit by Secretary-General Luis Almagro

    International Law is the most important tool we have to preserve peace’. These profounds words were recently spoken by H.E. Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, on the occasion of the first edition of the Carnegie Peacebuilding Conversations. Mr. Almagro, who was the highest dignitary to attend this event, addressed an attentive audience and spoke about the shared history between the Peace Palace and the OAS. However, it did not take long before he addressed the elephant in the room: the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

  • 8th World Water Forum, Brasilia, March 18-23, 2018

Its mission is “to promote awareness, build political commitment and trigger action on critical water issues at all levels, to facilitate the efficient conservation, protection, development, planning, management and use of water in all its dimensions on an environmentally sustainable basis for the benefit of all life on Earth”.

  • Hiroshima A-Bombed Tree Ceremony

    On the occasion of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to ICAN, a descendant of a Haki-kima-kaki tree (Diospyros kaki) that has emerged after the Hiroshima atomic attack has found a new home in the garden of the Peace Palace. Seeds from that Hako-kima-kaki tree were sent from Hiroshima to the Hortus botanicus in Leiden. They have been germinated there and have now grown into a beautiful young tree. In short speeches we have commemorated the victims of the atomic attack that remind us of the need to abolish nuclear weapons. The cruelty of atomic bombs and the suffering of the citizens of Horoshima and Nagasaki is engraved in our memory. Yet the beauty of a surviving tree from Japan gives hope for a better and more peaceful world.

    Around New Year the Peace Palace will be beautifully illuminated. Take part in a guided tour and discover an enchanting palace! A guide will tell you about the building and about the institutions housed in it. A tour through the Great and Small Hall of Justice, the corridors and the Japanese Room will give you an impression of the most beautiful rooms of the Palace. Book your tickets (€12,-) on the Peace Palace website. Tours have duration of approximately 45 minutes and are offered in Dutch and in English. A group consists of a maximum of 20 people. We recommend you to visit the exhibition and watch the film in the Visitors Centre before participating in a guided tour. Please note: Visitors are admitted only with a valid ID.

  • Sigrid Kaag awarded Peace Prize

    Ms. Sigrid Kaag, top diplomat who successfully led the OPCW-UN joint mission on the elimination of Syrian chemical weapons, received the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize on 16 November 2016. The Carnegie Foundation, which owns and manages the Peace Palace, has awarded this peace prize to Ms. Kaag for her successful efforts in accomplishing sensitive and dangerous missions in the Middle-East.
