  • ‘Make our planet great again’. The impact of Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement

    On 1 June 2017 Donald Trump, President of the United States of America (USA) announced that the USA would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement: “We’re getting out, but we will start to negotiate, and we will see if we can make a deal that’s fair.” The Paris Climate Agreement which aims at limiting and mitigating the effect of climate change, is an agreement which builds upon the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Trump’s decision has been scorned and condemned by many.

  • The Case of Albert Woodfox and Solitary Confinement

    Albert Woodfox, an American prisoner who was held in solitary confinement for 43 years was finally released on February 19th, 2016. Albert Woodfox, was part of the ‘Angola Three’, a group of three prisoners who were placed in solitary confinement in the State Penitentiary of Louisiana, also known as the Angola Prison. The case of Albert Woodfox is unique because no other prisoner in US history has been held in solitary confinement for this length of time. This blog will briefly discuss the circumstances of the case of Albert Woodfox and the use of solitary confinement in light of international standards.

  • Bibliotheek van het Vredespaleis viert 200 jaar Nederlandse Grondwet

    On Saturday 29 March, the Netherlands celebrated the 200-year anniversary of the 1814 Dutch constitution, the oldest constitution in the world after the American constitution. The Peace Palace Library participated in this event with an interactive tour explaining the relationship between the Dutch constitution and international law.
