    After serving the Carnegie Foundation as General-Director and The Hague Academy as Treasurer for a period of 13 years, Steven van Hoogstraten has officially retired on Wednesday, January 27th, 2016. For this occasion, we interviewed him and reflected on his career and achievements, his most memorable moments and his initial and future hopes for the Peace Palace. Steven van Hoogstraten started his career working at various Dutch Ministries where much of his work was focused on the implementation of European and International Law into the Dutch legal system.

    On Wednesday 27 January 2016, the Carnegie Foundation has bid an official farewell to its former General-Director and Treasurer of The Hague Academy of International Law, Mr. Steven van Hoogstraten. After serving the Carnegie Foundation for thirteen years, Mr. Van Hoogstraten has been succeeded on July 1st by Mr. Erik de Baedts. To mark this special occasion, the Carnegie Foundation organised a seminar-debate titled “The Peace Palace, International Centre for the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes” with various distinghuised speakers.     The Perfect Farewell Gift: “The Life of Hugo Grotius”

    For the last few months, the Peace Palace Library was on a mission of finding the perfect farewell gift for Steven van Hoogstraten upon the occasion of his retirement as the General-Director of the Carnegie Foundation. Since we prefer to remain true to ourselves, we decided to give to him a special work titled ‘The Life of Hugo Grotius’ (Het Leven van Hugo de Groot). This antique book was published in 1785 and is an early biography on the life of Grotius, the founding Father of International Law.

  • UN Peace Day, Andrew Carnegie and Dunfermline

    On September 21, UN Peace Day was celebrated for the third time in Dunfermline, Scotland. The celebrations were initiated by Queen Anne High School who invited a total of 600 pupils from 11 different schools in the county of Fife to participate in a special Peace Day Conference.The event was supported by the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust who together with Queen Anne High School invited the Dutch Carnegie Foundation to give a speech on Andrew Carnegie, the ‘founding father’ of the Peace Palace and Dunfermline’s most famous son.
