International Day of Neutrality
December 13, 2018On de UN calendar is filled with a variety if special days on which an international relevant topic is remembered or celebrated. Some of these have been around for a long time, like the Human Rights Day, be some days have been put on the calendar more recently and are maybe less well-known. One of these recent and possibly less known days is the International Day of Neutrality, which was commemorated yesterday, 12 December. The International Day of Neutrality was recognized by the General Assembly on 2 February 2017 with Resolution 71/275.

October 23, 2018International Law is the most important tool we have to preserve peace’. These profounds words were recently spoken by H.E. Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, on the occasion of the first edition of the Carnegie Peacebuilding Conversations. Mr. Almagro, who was the highest dignitary to attend this event, addressed an attentive audience and spoke about the shared history between the Peace Palace and the OAS. However, it did not take long before he addressed the elephant in the room: the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

February 29, 2016On Wednesday February 3, 2016, UPEACE Centre The Hague, in cooperation with the Peace Palace Library, organized a lecture on the Dutch candidature for membership of the United Nations Security Council. This Peace Palace Library report will give an overview of the lecture with the main focus on the keynote speaker: former Dutch diplomat Mr. Herman Schaper. Mr. Schaper’s idea of the lecture was to discuss the Dutch campaign for membership of the UN Security Council based on his own experiences of the campaign in the past years. In addition, he also explained to his audience the work process that has been going on at the United Nations in New York to achieve this goal of the Dutch government.

November 26, 2014On December 4, the City of The Hague and the recently founded Water Diplomacy Consortium (WDC) will organize a seminar on International Water Conflicts. The WDC offers advisory services to governments and public entities at all levels, training and capacity building, knowledge exchange, advice on conflict resolution methods, direct assistance as an honest broker in conflict resolution and on post-conflict peacebuilding in and through the water sector, research, publications and the organization of conferences. The seminar will take place in the Peace Palace on December 4 at 16.00 hrs.

September 5, 2014On August 20, the Hague Institute for Global Justice organized a high level panel on ‘Peace Technologies’ together with the newly established Peace Informatics Lab of Leiden Univeristy. A discussion was held between experts from civil society groups, governmental institutions, academia and the private sector to exchange ideas and examine what role modern technology can play in peace processes or in the prevention of conflicts. The event was an important opportunity to share knowledge in what is considered to be a revolutionary field. This blog will provide a brief summary of this event as well as give some background information on this particular subject.

In these lectures various speakers will have the opportunity to share their views on peace and peacebuilding policies. We were honoured to welcome an important and passionate speaker, Ms. Judy Cheng-Hopkins, who works as the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support for the United Nations. Moreover, she is a Member of the Council for the University for Peace in Costa Rica, which indicates her interest in the relevance of peace education.
