  • The Hague Academy Summer Courses 2018

    We welcome all students of the The Hague Academy of International Law’s summer courses, first period 9 July – 27 July (Public International Law) and second period 30 July -17 August (Private International Law). The coming six weeks, the library will serve as the Academy’s ‘home library’, providing the students with access to all books, articles, essays and documentation on international law available in either paper or electronic format.

    As we turn the page on 2017, a lot has happened in the world and also specific on the international law arena. In this blog the Peace Palace Library looks back on the most notable international law news and Peace Palace Library lectures and events. On 22 November 2017, Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb army and one-time fugitive from international justice has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

  • Book Review: War, Peace and International Order?

    This book attempts to assess the history and on-going relevance of the 1899 and 1907 Hague peace conferences, the conventions they brought into being, the institutions they established and the precedents they set. The exact legacies of the two conferences remain unclear. On the one hand, diplomatic and military historians, who cast their gaze to 1914, traditionally dismiss the events of 1899 and 1907 as insignificant footnotes on the path to the First World War. On the other, experts in international law posit that The Hague’s foremost legacy lies in the manner in which the conferences progressed the law of war and the concept and application of international justice.

  • 2017 Programme The Hague Academy Summer Courses

    The Summer Courses are organized in two periods of 3 weeks each, one focusing on Public International Law and one on Private International Law. Since the very outset in 1923 thousands of students from over 100 nationalities have been able to attend them. Many alumni, having thus had the opportunity to meet “great names” in the field of international Law, have subsequently gone on to become themselves well-known academics, lawyers or diplomats, among other occupations. The courses consist of lectures on general or special topics and are subsequently published in the Collected Courses series, of which there are currently over 380 volumes, ranking among the most important encyclopaedic publications on public and private international law.

  • Encyclopedia of Islamic International Law

    For our Arabic reading clients we have a really special acquisition to announce. In 2011, the Peace Palace Library started to build an Arabic, Persian and Turkish Law collection. Since then, we have added some 3000 items to our catalogue.You can find them dispersed through the catalogue according to their subjects. This 9 volume ‘Encyclopedia of Islamic International Law’, written by Suhayl Husayn al Fatlawi and published in Amman by Dar al Thaqafa in 2014, is a comparative study with Public International Law. Volume 1 “The Principles of Islamic International Law” treats the concept, the sources – Quran, Sunna, treaties, justice and fairness – and general principles, a.o. customary law. Volume 2 “The Morality in Prophet Mohammad Diplomacy” explains the legal position of the Prophet, his morality, the direction of the international relations, in particular with other religions, treaties, the settlement of international disputes and his immunities and privileges. Volume 3 “International Legal Personality in Islam” is about the Islamic State, legal personality for Non-States, Non-Islamic groups and individuals.
