    The Perfect Farewell Gift: “The Life of Hugo Grotius”

    For the last few months, the Peace Palace Library was on a mission of finding the perfect farewell gift for Steven van Hoogstraten upon the occasion of his retirement as the General-Director of the Carnegie Foundation. Since we prefer to remain true to ourselves, we decided to give to him a special work titled ‘The Life of Hugo Grotius’ (Het Leven van Hugo de Groot). This antique book was published in 1785 and is an early biography on the life of Grotius, the founding Father of International Law.

    “I first heard of The Hague Academy of International Law and The Peace Palace Library a few years ago as a law undergraduate at the University of Nigeria. This ignited an aspiration in me to attend the Academy, because it was in line with my dream of becoming an expert in international law.     2015 Advanced Course on International Criminal Law

    This year, for the first time, the Hague Academy of International Law, in cooperation with the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden University and with the kind support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, organizes an advanced Course of two weeks on International Criminal Law with a special focus on Gender Justice. This year’s session particularly emphasizes on a critical evaluation of persistent challenges and emerging responses to sexual and gender-based violence. We were able to speak to two participants, Ms Jimena Viveros and Mr Dr. Elijah Oluwatoyin Okebukola, to ask them about their experiences so far.

    2015 Centre for Studies and Research: Access of Individuals to International Justice

    Last week, the 2015 Centre for Studies and Research in International Law and International Relations has started for a period of three weeks. The Centre is designed to bring together young international lawyers of a high standard from all over the world, to undertake original research on a common general theme which is determined each year by Curatorium of the Hague Academy. The research undertaken during the Centre is included in a collective work published by the Academy. Theme this year: Access to Individuals to International Justice. The aim is to cover both theoretical and practical aspects, with regard to a variety of situations and contexts.

  • Celebrating International Criminal Justice Day : Judge Monageng Visits.

    On July 17th, 2015, The Hague Academy of International Law and the Peace Palace Library celebrated International Criminal Justice Day, the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute. The highlight was a conversation with former International Criminal Court (ICC) Vice President Judge Sanji Mmasenono MONAGENG and Hague Academy of International Law students to discuss her work and thoughts on justice. At the beginning of her speech, Judge Monageng said International Criminal Justice Day “unites people like you and me who wish to support justice, who wish to promote human rights… and who wish to help prevent crimes that threaten the peace and security of this world.” After the session, attendees were photographed with signs for the #JusticeMatters campaign, and the day ended with a free showing of the documentary film ‘Burden of Peace’.
